Book Review: The Kneeling Mind by Eric A. Lambert, Jr.

    Reviewed by Tavares S. Carney

    Amazon: 5

    Live the Joyful Life

Pastor Eric Lambert discusses the 10 Attitudes for Victorious living in The Kneeling Mind – Acknowledging Christ; Studying the Word of God; Thanksgiving; Representing Christ; Prayer; Praise; Fellowship; Prosperity; Giving; Chasing God’s Heart and the “Final Attitude.” The book is written in a progressing fashion in order that one is informed how to develop and display appropriate Christian, Christ-like behaviors and ways of thinking during his or her spiritual journey. Beginning with the first attitude of acknowledging Christ, Pastor Lambert explains how one’s thinking patterns and thought processes will allow for total control of the physical according to God’s word. A mind submissive to God’s word will never mislead; thus, the kneeling mind. Pastor Lambert quotes scripture, gives real-life examples and is straight to the point. This book is easy to understand and a relatively fast read. This is a book to read again and again for inspiration, motivation and encouragement.

Confessions of A Preacher’s Wife by mikasenoja (release date: April 29, 2008 - Urban Christian)

    Review by Tavares S. Carney

    Amazon: 4

This is the re-release of mikasenoja’s The First Lady: Confessions of A Preacher’s Wife, first released as a self-published literary work in 2005 under AuthorHouse. Readers can expect to see the updated, new and improved work released on Urban Christian in April 2008.

In Confessions, mikasenoja takes readers on the inside of a pastor’s life, with a first lady looking glass. So often are first ladies not honored or considered as the leading man’s other half and the sacrifices she makes in order that her husband is available to shepard his flock. This book gives us a vivid picture of the life of a first lady. Mikasenoja gives readers raw and true emotions of the spouse so often living in the shadows. From resentment, bitterness and anger to loving, understanding and patience, first ladies experience a myriad of emotions at any given time, always seeking to do the right thing, yet not sacrifice one’s own integrity or losing oneself in the process. I believe the author was trying to communicate to all first ladies that in supporting their leading men, it is necessary to find and maintain balance.

Mikasenoja uses real-life examples and lets us, readers and churchgoers alike, in on the daily lives and goings on of a first family. She opens our eyes to the minds, thought patterns and emotions of a first lady. The author wrote in a “keep it real” fashion, unwavering in sharing her own thoughts whether they were good or not so good. She proved humanistic, yet always opted for the Christian thing to do.

Because this was a content edit copy received for review, I overlooked spelling and grammatical errors.

Color Me Butterfly by L.Y. Marlow

    Amazon Rating: 4

    by Tavares S. Carney

    A Blessing and A Curse
In this no-holds barred memoir, L.Y. Marlow does an excellent job of drawing readers into the pain of her past. Color Me Butterfly is filled with vivid scenarios entailing physical and emotional abuse at the hands of the men in her grandmother’s, her mother’s, her own and her daughter’s lives. While stories such as this are not unheard of, Ms. Marlow does a good job in sharing with readers her family’s particular story.

The blessing is that the women in this family clearly have a strong bond, sustaining each other and seeing each other through some very tough times. The curse is that a cycle of physical and emotional abuse was perpetuated down through the years. The novel clearly shows that Ms. Marlow not only lived her family’s history, but actually took the time to research and talk to her elders. It shows her legacy is important to her. I particularly appreciated the fact that Ms. Marlow eventually recognized the downward spiral and sought to change circumstances surrounding her and her daughter, Treasure, in hopes of breaking the cycle of abuse. Only time will tell if the cycle has been broken.

Admittedly, I would have liked to have learned what affects the abuse had on her male siblings in their relationships, if any, during their adult lives; however, this was a good, engaging read for me overall. I recommend Color Me Butterfly to victims of domestic violence, victims of sexual abuse, families that have had to or are dealing with these issues, including the effects the abuse has, such as mental illness and suicidal tendencies, as well as readers that favor or are interested in a well written memoir.
